Histoire de Pondichéry 1/2

J’aimerai aborder une page d’histoire dans mon blog en vous présentant le plus succinctement possible pourquoi l’Inde fascine et comment  s’est formée Pondichéry.

L’inde a pendant très longtemps attiré les convoitises de tous les empires du monde.  Elle a été longtemps considérée comme un véritable eldorado pour tous les marchands du monde. On y trouve des épices rares, des animaux sauvages, des fruits et plantes exotiques ainsi qu'une énorme richesse en matières premières à travers ses mines d’or et de pierres précieuses.

                Avant l’ère coloniale, les arabes puis les Mongols ont occupé une grande partie du territoire, influençant fortement sur la culture Indienne. Puis ce fut au tour des grands empires coloniaux de s’intéresser à ce pays, notamment l'Angleterre qui fit de l’Inde l’une de ses principales colonies.

                Or, la ville de Pondichéry a été une colonie Française pendant plus de deux décennies, du XVIII siècle jusqu’en 1954. Les premiers à s’installer furent les hollandais dans les années 1594. C’est eux qui batirent le plan en échiquier de  la ville, très caractéristique des villes européennes mais rare en inde.                                                                   

     

         Ce fut  ensuite les Français qui arrivèrent en 1673. Ils y installèrent leur compagnie des indes et Pondichéry prospéra, devenant une énorme plaque tournante dans le commerce avec la France. Les Français commençaient à étendre leur présence sur le sud de l’inde mais devait faire face à de multiples batailles contre les Britanniques, présent sur la totalité du territoire. Malgré un faible traité de paix avec les Anglais, Pondichéry fut rasée en 1761 et perdit depuis ce jour sa prestigieuse renommée. Elle resta tout de même la seule enclave Française en Inde, servant de porte d’accès vers l’Indochine. Les Français quittèrent Pondichéry en 1954 et laissèrent une très bonne image derrière eux. Aujourd’hui encore, la vie à Pondichéry est marquée par cet héritage colonial Français.

During a long time, India has been q land which attracted all empires off the world. India is a really Eldorado for all the merchants thanks to his fertility soil, his favorable climate for agriculture and their luxuriant forest. It is full of scarce spices, wild animal, exotic fruit and raw material like gold and diamonds.
      Before the colonial Era, Arabs then Mongols occupied an amazing part of the land, influencing a lot India’s culture. Then it was the turn of Occidental countries to settle down in India. They are all created their own “company of India” to bring back all the wealth of this country.

      Puducherry (PONDICHERRY) attracted romains and Chinese. She has been a French colony during 3 century, in the XVIII to 1954. But, there are not the first Before It was the Dutch, in the 1594. Thanks to them, Pondicherry was building in q chess plan which characteristics of the European tow, rare in India. The French establish in Pondicherry, building a fort. They created an interested plan and develop the entire city. But, they wanted to expand themselves and fought with the English for the control of near town as Chennai, which has been taken and recaptured. England has hand of the majority of India and pushed back and razed to the ground Pondicherry. In spite of this victory, Pondicherry stole the only French colony in India until 1954.

      Nowadays, we see the French influence when walking on the street with the “Lycee Français”, different monuments like one for the old fighter in 1941 to 1918,an other of Jeanne d’Arc statue’s, the “Institue Française” de Pondicherry or the “Alliance Française” which is always very active. They created “Bonjour India”, a celebration in all the January month. Fortunately, I had the chance to participate and see different kind of concert, typical dance. Moreover, the street have French name like Dupuy,Victor SImonel, Romain Rolland.  
    But, the French presence wane and the town became more and more India as if French culture is important part of the city. French has left good memory of them.
